Russia is trying to enlist Kazakh citizens for its war against Ukraine, according to a report by Kazakhstan’s Kostanay regional prosecutor’s office, published on June 29.

The report notes a recent surge in social media activity related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, including footage from the front lines, and various posts and comments on the issue. Some of this content allegedly calls on citizens of Kazakhstan to join the Russian military in its campaign against Ukraine.

The prosecutor's office stated that comments from some social network users, including citizens of Kazakhstan, contained "separatist appeals regarding the territorial integrity of Kazakhstan."

There have also been reported attempts by Russians in the Kostanay region to encourage locals to participate in the conflict against Ukraine. The authorities have not provided details on the recruitment methods used or whether anyone involved in these recruitment efforts has been arrested.

In mid-April, it was revealed that the Committee for National Security of Kazakhstan had opened ten criminal cases related to the participation of Kazakh citizens in military activities in Ukraine.

The prosecutor's office reiterated that in Kazakhstan, the act of recruitment for participation in military conflicts abroad is a criminal offense, punishable by up to ten years in prison.
