Invading Russian forces will not even be able to pretend to hold a sham referendum in the occupied parts of Kherson Oblast due to the actions of the Ukrainian army and the resistance of the population, Ukraine’s military believes.

Andriy Yusov, a representative of the press service of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, said in a Telegram messenger post on Sept. 7 that the invaders may tryto announce “some actions,” but they would be unable to even imitate legitimizing the process of seizing Ukrainian territories by holding sham votes.

“Neither the Armed Forces of Ukraine nor society as a whole are giving the Russians even the opportunity to imitate this process,” he said.

“And, of course, the world will immediately reject even the very attempt to hold such a referendum – it won’t be taken seriously.”

Yusov said the invaders themselves understand the futility of even trying to take the so-called “referendums” seriously.

The U.S. Department of State said that sham referendums in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine could take place in the coming weeks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Aug. 7 warned that any such illegitimate votes would rule out any further Ukraine-Russia talks.
