Combat over the eastern Ukrainian city of Severodonetsk is continuing around the clock, and Russian troops currently control the majority of the city’s residential areas, head of the city’s military administration, Oleksandr Stryuk, said on Ukrainian TV on June 20.

“In terms of the city as a whole – the Armed Forces of Ukraine hold over a third of it: the industrial zone and adjacent areas, and the part of the city along the Siversky Donets River,” he commented.

Stryuk noted that the fighting in the city is relentless, day and night. Meanwhile, Russian forces are using banned cluster munitions to bomb the city.

President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier said that the fight for Severodonetsk will be decisive in the larger Battle for Donbas, adding that action there is extremely intense, with Russia losing as many as 300 troops every day.

By June 13, the Russian army had destroyed all bridges to the city, further exacerbating the dire conditions local residents find themselves in.

On June 18, the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War assessed that the Russian offensive in Donbas has largely lost momentum in recent days.
