Russian forces are no longer capable of holding off a Ukrainian counter-offensive near Izyum, Kharkiv Oblast, Conflict Intelligence Team (CIT) researcher Kyrylo Mykhailov said in an interview with NV Radio on Aug. 2.

“Some Ukrainian units are already advancing near Izyum,” said Mykhailov.

“We see numerous videos of Russian armor getting destroyed and captured – sometimes along with documents and insignias. Russian forces in the area are clearly in trouble.”

While CIT previously assessed that Moscow would try to resume advancing from Izyum, Mykhailov said that current Russian reserves there are insufficient to even contain Ukrainian counter-offensives.

Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, said on July 22 that Izyum had been bombed even more heavily than Mariupol, in Donetsk Oblast.

Russian forces in Izyum are using locals as human shields, Mayor Valerii Marchenko said in June.
