About half of Russia’s modern tanks were destroyed during the ongoing invasion of Ukraine, according to a report by UK-based International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), published on Feb. 15.
“Around 50% of its pre-war fleet of modern T-72B3s and T-72B3Ms is assessed to have been lost,” says the report.
“Moreover, the composition of Russia’s tank inventory has changed.”
IISS noted that due to the loss of modern vehicles, Russia is pulling old tanks from storage in order to replenish its units.
Analysts note that the war is finally pushing out Soviet-era equipment from post-Cold War inventories of many Eastern European countries.
“The flow of Western artillery to Ukraine is modernizing Kyiv’s inventory and delivering improved capability,” the IISS added.
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, since the beginning of the Russian full-scale invasion, Moscow has lost 3,290 tanks in Ukraine.
