Ukraine sees no alternative to the establishment of a special tribunal to hold Russia accountable for war crimes committed in Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Feb. 20.
“In our opinion, there is no alternative to the establishment of a special tribunal,” he said during a press conference with U.S. President Joe Biden in Kyiv.
According to the Ukrainian president, the issue of restoring justice is extremely important.“
The aggressor must be held responsible for the aggression and compensate for all damages,” he said.
Zelenskyy also thanked Biden for supporting Ukraine’s work on restoring justice.
On Jan. 19, 2023, the European Parliament adopted a resolution in support of the establishment of an international tribunal to prosecute those responsible for the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
On Jan. 26, a meeting of the Core Group on establishment of the Special Tribunal to investigate the crime of aggression against Ukraine was held in Prague. It was attended by representatives of 20 countries.
Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that a special tribunal is the only way to bring Russia’s top political and military leadership to justice for aggression against a sovereign state.
