Russia has plans to carry out a coup d’état in Moldova, Moldovan President Maia Sandu said during a pressbriefing on Feb. 13.

“(Russia’s) plan for the coming period includes sabotage involving military-trained people disguised as civilians to carry out violent acts, attacks on government buildings and hostage-taking,” she said.

According to Sandu, Russia intends to stage a coup d’état in Moldova and take over the government in the country with the help of opposition protests.

The Moldovan president stressed the documents received from Ukraine “point to the locations and logistical aspects of organizing this subversive activity.”

“The plan also involves using foreigners to carry out violent acts,” she said.

“For example, the materials contain instructions on the rules for entering Moldova for citizens of Russia, Belarus, Serbia, and Montenegro.”

Sandu assured that the state security agencies are working to prevent these provocations and keeping the situation under control.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Feb. 9 that Ukrainian intelligence had intercepted a Russian plan to politically destroy Moldova.

The director of Moldova’s Information and Security Service (SIB), Alexandru Musteață, also warned about a possible Russian offensive against Moldova as early as the beginning of 2023.

Poland’s Foreign Ministry has said that Poland, the Baltic countries, and Moldova are all among the Kremlin’s targets, though no Russian military action is expected in the near future.

Ukrainian military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov said that Ukraine was ready to help Moldova remove the Russian occupation in that country.

Russia has occupied the Moldovan region of Transnistria since 1990, ruling the region via a puppet authority similar to those it set up in Ukraine’s Donbas.
