Moscow is being forced to replenish its heavy losses in the war against Ukraine with "non-traditional recruitment" – convicts from its prisons, the UK Ministry of Defense’s latest Ukraine war update on Twitter reads.
The shortage of personnel is likely forcing the Russian Defense Ministry to resort to recruiting personnel from Russian prisons for the Wagner Private Military Company, the ministry said in its July 12 post.
"If true, this move likely indicates difficulties in replacing the significant numbers of Russian casualties," the Ministry said.
With regard to the situation at the front, the ministry noted that Russian troops continue to make very small territorial gains in Donetsk Oblast. In particular, Russia announced the capture of the town of Hryhorivka.
Russian invading forces are also continuing their offensive along the E-40 main supply route towards the cities of Slovyansk and Kramatorsk.
"Russian forces are likely maintaining military pressure on Ukrainian forces, whilst regrouping and reconstituting for further offensives in the near future," the UK Defense Ministry’s report reads.
