Russia’s 64th Mechanized Infantry Brigade, responsible for war crimes and atrocities against civilians near Kyiv, has lost 90% of its personnel to combat casualties, desertions, and resignations, Ukraine’s General Staff said in a Facebook post on Sept. 18.
According to the report, the brigade’s armor reservers will be transferred to Russian border patrol regiments, and the unit itself will be disbanded.
Following the month-long Russian occupation of Bucha and nearby Irpin and Hostomel in Kyiv Oblast, numerous bodies of tortured and killed civilians were uncovered. The 64-th Mechanized Infantry Brigade was present in the area at the time.
As of Aug. 5, the bodies of 1,348 murdered civilians have been found in Kyiv Oblast. As much as 90% of exhumed bodies indicate the victims were shot.
Moscow maintains that all evidence of apparent Russian war crimes near Kyiv and elsewhere is fabricated as a part of an apparent smear campaign against the country. However, this is a lie, as overwhelming evidence indicates Russian responsibility in these matters.
