Invading Russian forces are transferring elite units to the town of Bakhmut, Donetsk Oblast, to cover for huge losses suffered by Wagner mercenary company forces, the spokesperson for Ukraine’s Eastern Military Grouping, Serhiy Cherevatyi, said on Ukrainian television on April 9.
He emphasized the move was a forced measure rather than a planned step to beef up the Russian forces in the area.
Cherevatyi noted that Russian airborne units had also reported losses in Bakhmut and had been reinforced by conscripts.
“Wagner (Group) is suffering very heavy losses, so they are forced to bring in additional regular army units, including paratroopers and motorized riflemen, to replenish the group in that area,” he said.
Earlier, Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar said that the Russian invaders were deploying not only Wagner mercenary forces, but also their most professional units, which have already suffered significant losses, in attempted operations to capture Bakhmut.
