Russian occupation authorities in the occupied territories of southern Ukraine have informed parents that if they do not obtain Russian passports, their children will be banned from enrolling in school, Ukraine’s National Resistance Center (NRC) reported on June 27.

“Also, teenagers aged 14 and over must have Russian documents,” the report says.

“Otherwise, their [current enrollment] will be terminated.”

The Russians are attempting to blackmail local populations into taking Russian citizenship, since their passportization drive – “Russianizing” Ukrainian citizens – is failing, according to the NRC.

The NRC previously reported that the Russians were intensifying repression against the civilian population in the occupied territories due to opposition to the occupation authority’s passportization policy.

Human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets said that those who have been forced to obtain Russian passports cannot be viewed as criminals.
