The Russian military for the first time launched a massive missile strike at Ukraine with a wide range of missile types, including the feared Kinzhal hypersonic missile, Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat said on Ukraine’s TV Channel 24 on March 9.
“I don’t remember this happening before,” Ihnat said.
“In total, the enemy launched six Kinzhals.”
Ihnat also said Russia used a wide range of aircraft, including strategic bombers and MiG-31K supersonic interceptor aircraft.
“We aren’t yet able to shoot down Kinzhal, Kh-22 and S-300 missiles,” the air force spokesperson said.
“The Russians wanted to hit our air defense system with guided air missiles.”
Russia launched another massive missile barrage against Ukraine overnight on March 9. Explosions rocked several cities and regions, including the capital city Kyiv.
Casualties were reported as a result of the attack, as well as damage to energy infrastructure facilities.
Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valerii Zaluzhnyi said Russia had launched a total of 81 missiles at Ukraine. Ukrainian air defense forces succeeded in destroying 34 cruise missiles, as well as four out of eight attacking Shahed-136/131 suicide drones.
