It will take years for Russia to rebuild its forces following the mauling it has taken in Ukraine, the UK Ministry of Defense said in its daily military intelligence update, posted on Twitter on May 2.

According to the ministry, the 120 battalion tactical groups (BTG) Russia deployed to Ukraine constituted around 65% of Moscow’s total ground forces.

“It is likely that more than a quarter of these units have now been rendered combat ineffective,” MoD’s message reads.

Some of Russia’s most elite regiments – including the vaunted VDV paratroopers – suffered the highest levels of attrition, the assessment goes on.
