Russian Colonel Ivan Mertvishchev, who works in the main organizational and mobilization department of Russia’s General Staff, has been detained for demanding a bribe from a military commissar, the Russian newspaper Kommersant reported on Nov. 22.
According to the newspaper, Mertvishchev decided to check the joint military registration and enlistment office of Moscow’s Ramenki district.
Prior to that, he called its military commissar and “made it clear” that recruiting was not going well.
Mertvishchev threatened that he would definitely find something to complain about, even if everything would be fine with the documents, which could harm the career of the military commissar.
To avoid this, the General Staff’s representative had offered to buy him a washing machine worth at least RUB 70,000 (over $1,100), upon receiving which he was detained by the security forces.
He is currently under house arrest. In accordance with Part 5 of Art. 290 (receiving a bribe related to extortion) of the Russian Criminal Code, he may face a fine or imprisonment for up to 12 years.
