Representatives of the European Union boycotted a farewell party for Russian Ambassador to the EU Vladimir Chizhov on Sept. 8, who has left his post after 17 years of work, television channel Euractiv reports.

The Russian diplomat held a reception, which was attended mainly by diplomats from non-EU countries. There were no representatives of EU countries or the European External Action Service.

One EU diplomat said on condition of anonymity that he was glad to see Chizhov go because, in his words, he has been a "hostile and destructive" official who had caused great damage to relations with the bloc.

At his farewell reception, Chizhov accused the EU of "destroying bridges" without mentioning the main reason for the breakdown in relations – Russia's war against Ukraine.
