There has been a slight improvement in the position of Russia’s invasion forces near Kreminna, Luhansk Oblast, although their primary focus remains on defense, UK Defense Intelligence wrote on Twitter in their March 23 daily summary.

Intense battles have been ongoing in the Svatove-Kreminna region since early March 2023, the report said.

The Russian military has managed to recapture nearby areas surrounding Kreminna, which were previously threatened by Ukrainian forces. They have also made progress by advancing several kilometers in certain locations within the Russian Federation.

“The Russian command, most likely, is trying to expand the ‘security zone’ to the west of the defense lines that they have set up on high ground, and to integrate the Oskil River into the defense as a natural obstacle. Most likely, they will want to capture Kupyansk, which is a logistics hub,” the report said.

Meanwhile, UK intelligence suggests that the emphasis in the northeastern region of the Russian Federation is likely for defensive operations.

The Russian command is probably concerned about the potential for Ukraine to launch a significant offensive in this area, the department added.

Russian occupying forces unsuccessfully attempted to carry out offensive actions in the settlements of Makiyivka and Bilohorivka in Luhansk Oblast, Ukraine’s General Staff reported.
