Russian soldiers have kidnapped the mayor of Kherson, Ihor Kolykhaiev, advisor to the mayor Halyna Lyashevska said on June 28.

“They took Igor Kolykhaiev,” she wrote on Facebook.

A statement on the page of the Kherson City Council on Facebook also reads that today the Russian invaders kidnapped Kherson Mayor Ihor Kolykhaiev.

“So far, nothing is known about his whereabouts,” says the message.

Later Lyashevska revealed more details on the mayor's abduction.

According to her, the pro-Ukrainian city head was handcuffed by Russian troops before being abducted.

Lyashevska said the mayor was abducted on June 28 after he arrived at the communal institutions where the remaining employees of the legitimate city executive committee continue to work

.“As soon as he got out of the car, he was immediately detained by armed Russian national guards and, most likely, by the FSB (the Russian security service, successor to the KGB),” Lyashevska said on Facebook.

She said the Russian soldiers had seized hard drives from computers and cracked open all of the committee’s safes, looking for documents.“All this time, Kolykhaiev was kept in a separate room in handcuffs with armed guards near him.

After the search, Kolykhaiev was put on a bus marked with a “Z” and taken away,” she wrote. Lyashevskaya said she believes that the mayor was kidnapped because of his refusal to cooperate with the invaders.“A few days ago, Kolykhaiev received a letter from the ‘newly appointed’ (collaborator) mayor, in which he invited Kolykhaiev to discuss future ‘cooperation,’” she said. “After he refused to meet, Kolykhaiev was threatened with arrest. Kolykhaiev (still) did not go.”
