Ukrainian servicemen managed to shoot down an overflying Russian Kh-101 cruise missile with heavy machine gun and assault rifle fire, during Moscow’s Dec. 5 massive missile strike, press service of the Ukrainian National Guard reported via Facebook.
According to the message, the Russian missile was eliminated by soldiers of the mobile firing group of 27th Pechersk Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine.
"The missile, which was flying at a low altitude, was hit with large-caliber machine guns and machine gun fire," the message reads.
The press service added that the National Guard's firing units are designed to counter missile and drone strikes, with a particular focus on taking down kamikaze drones.
"Combined with the effective work of air defense units, this allows to increase the number of neutralized air targets and thus preserve civilian infrastructure and lives of our citizens," the press center added.
On Dec. 5, Russia launched its eighth missile barrage against Ukraine’s power grid. Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept 60 of 70 incoming cruise missiles.
