Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who has recently been sentenced by a court to nine years in a penal colony, spoke via video link at a court hearing on May 24 to consider his appeal against the verdict.

In particular, Navalny spoke about Russia's war against Ukraine during his last plea.

"Do you want to stop progress? You can break many destinies, but you will be defeated both here and in the stupid war you are waging," Navalny's associate Kira Yarmysh quoted him as saying.

"Of course, I'm ready to serve time in jail to tell everyone that people are dying," Navalny said.

Eventually, the court upheld the sentence against Navalny, namely nine years in a penal colony in a case of fraud and contempt of court.
