During their weeks-long occupation of Irpin, Russian troops shot civilians in the streets and then drove over their bodies in tanks, the city’s mayor Oleksandr Markushyn said on April 7.

“The even more cruel, inhuman acts were when they (the Russian troops) would shoot our people, and then drive tanks over their bodies; we couldn’t get people’s remains until after the town was liberated from (Russian) scum,” Markushyn said.

“We had to scrape bodies off the roads with shovels.”

According to the mayor, the invaders raped local women and stole anything they could carry – from washing machines to underwear.

The Russian shot anyone in Irpin they didn’t like, Markushyn said.

“Once (Irpin) was liberated, residents told me that the occupiers were splitting families, taking men away from their wives and children,” the mayor added.

“Men were used in prisoner exchanges; those they didn’t like – and these are facts, confirmed by eyewitness accounts – were shot, those who refused to cooperate, were shot.”

“A child was killed, many men were killed (in Irpin).”
