Five people have died at a checkpoint in Vasylivka in Zaporizhzhia Oblast over the past week, due to the occupying forces delaying people’s transit, the mayor of Melitopol, Ivan Fedorov, said on Telegram on July 25.

"There are more than 1,200 cars in line at the Russian checkpoint,” Fedorov wrote.

“5,000 residents of the temporarily occupied territories are trying to leave.”

He noted that the occupiers allow from 20 to 150 cars a day to pass, but many more are attempting to pass through.

Vasylivka is the only transit point for residents of the occupied territories of Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Donetsk, and Luhansk oblasts, to the territory controlled by Ukraine.

Fedorov said on July 19 that the second wave of evacuations had begun in the occupied territories, adding that the flow of people is comparable to the first month of the occupation.

Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Iryna Vereshchuk and presidential advisor Mykhailo Podolyak called on the residents of the occupied regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia oblasts to evacuate.
