Russian soldiers raped women and killed civilians during their October 2022 retreat from Lyman, Donetsk Oblast, according to an audio intercept published by Ukraine’s SBU security service on Jan. 9.
“When we left Lyman, we slaughtered everyone there, all those fucking khohols (slur for Ukrainians) ...,” a Russian soldier says in the recording.
“We raped, slaughtered them there, shot them. In Lyman, in Torske, we were just walking and shooting everyone. Younger men were taken (as POWs) with us, and the women, the young ones – everyone was f*cked, cut, and shot.”
SBU noted the recorded phone conversation would be another item of evidence of Russia's war crimes in Ukraine. The service opened more than 21,000 criminal cases related to Russian troops breaking international law and customs of war, to date.
On Oct. 2, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the Armed Forces of Ukraine have completely cleared Lyman, Donetsk Oblast, from Russian troops.
Ukraine’s Operational Command East spokesman Serhiy Cherevaty added that during their retreat from Lyman, the invaders left behind numerous explosive devices and landmines.
