Ukrainian forces defending the country’s second biggest city Kharkiv spent the entire night repelling an offensive by the Russian invaders, with columns of enemy vehicles being destroyed on the roads approaching the city, officials said.

Speaking on the Rada TV channel, the head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, Oleh Syniehubov said Kharkiv remained under the control of the Ukrainian military.

However, the enemy had fired artillery at residential areas, Syniehubov said. The shells hit houses and a kindergarten, and children were reported to be among the casualties.

Syniehubov did not specify the number of people killed in the enemy attacks.

He added that there were numerous sabotage groups in the city, and the risk of an offensive remains. He said the Ukrainian military had managed to eliminate a group of 20 invaders who were hiding in a school building.

Russian military vehicles also entered Kharkiv, but were promptly destroyed by the Ukrainian army.

As for the humanitarian situation in the city, according to Syniehubov, several logistics centers are being set up in Kharkiv to distribute food. The local population is voluntarily handing over their personal vehicles to the military to help protect the city.

Meanwhile, video of a barrage of Russian Grad anti-personnel rockets hitting civilian buildings in Kharkiv was posted on Twitter just before noon on Feb. 28.

The curfew on Feb. 28 will begin at 1500.

At 0500 on Feb. 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he had decided to launch a "special operation" in the Donbas following a request from the puppet authorities in the non-government-controlled Luhansk and Donetsk territories. Previously, the Russian government repeatedly stated that it would not attack Ukraine, while for months it has been pulling troops and equipment to the Ukrainian borders.

The confrontation continues for the fifth day. Russia is advancing from the north, east and south.

The Russian invasion is accompanied by artillery shelling of Ukrainian cities across the country, with military equipment penetrating the border. Numerous casualties have been reported in Ukrainian cities.
