Ukraine’s SBU security service has detained a Russian agent in the city of Mykolayiv who was spying on the deployment sites of Western weapons, the service reported on the Telegram messenger on March 1.

The SBU said the agent turned out to be a local tactical training instructor for a non-government organization.

Under the guise of conducting Ukrainian military training, he collected intelligence on the deployment of the defense forces’ units in the southern regions.

Russian special services tasked him with identifying the deployment sites of foreign weapons and warehouses with ammunition of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

To gather information, he gathered information from an unwitting Ukrainian military serviceman and passed it to a representative of Russia’s FSB security service. In turn, the enemy used this data to launch targeted missile strikes at Ukrainian military facilities.

The SBU officers launched a counter-intelligence operation and exposed the Russian agent.

According to the investigation, the traitor turned to the FSB on his own initiative and offered his help in the war against Ukraine.

During searches at the suspect’s place of residence, law enforcers found a mobile phone with evidence of the suspect’s correspondence with Russian supervisors, as well as weapons and ammunition. The seized items have been sent for examination.

The suspected traitor has been charged with treason and taken into custody.
