CNN: Gunman opens fire near White House

Secret Service officers shot a man who allegedly approached a checkpoint near the White House and opened fire on them, CNN reported on May 23, citing the agency. The suspect later died in hospital.
The unidentified man approached a checkpoint near the White House complex at around 6 p.m. on May 23 and opened fire, a Secret Service spokesperson said, citing preliminary findings.
Secret Service officers returned fire, wounding the suspect, who later died at a local hospital.
“A bystander was also struck by gunfire during the shooting. It remains unclear whether the bystander was wounded during the suspect’s initial shots or during the subsequent exchange of fire,” the spokesperson said.
The bystander remains in critical condition, a law enforcement official said.
No Secret Service officers were injured. U.S. President Donald Trump was at the residence at the time and was briefed on the incident by the Secret Service, a White House official said.
Gunfire was also reported near the White House complex in Washington on May 5. That incident occurred near the intersection of 15th Street and Independence Avenue. A minor bystander was injured after being struck by a bullet fired by the suspect.
