A significant amount of Russian military equipment was destroyed after several powerful blasts rocked the Saky airfield near the village of Novofedorivka on Aug. 9, the Oryx intelligence analysis group tweeted on Aug. 10.
According to Oryx, four Su-30SM multirole aircraft were destroyed, as well as six Su-24M/MR strike/tactical reconnaissance aircraft (five destroyed, one damaged).
Analyst Oliver Alexander tweeted “between 9-14 aircraft” had been destroyed as a result of the blasts.
Founder and creative director of Bellingcat Elliot Higgins said that he “can’t think of a time Russia has lost this many air assets in one day in recent memory.”
“They have to be deeply concerned about Ukraine’s ability to do similar strikes elsewhere, especially the Kerch Strait Bridge,” Higgins tweeted.
Several powerful blasts rocked the Saky airfield near Novofedorivka in Ukraine’s Russian-occupied Crimea on Aug. 9. Columns of smoke from the blasts could be seen rising from the base.
Russia’s Defense Ministry declared that “the detonation of several aviation munitions” had allegedly taken place at the Saky airfield.
Ukraine’s Defense Ministry also commented on the explosions at the airfield near Novofedorivka. They said that they could not establish the cause of the fire on the territory of the airfield, but noted the importance of “observing fire safety rules and the prohibition of smoking in non-smoking zones.”
