During the ongoing heavy fighting over Soledar, Donetsk Oblast, buildings and positions constantly change hands, as Ukrainian troops mount a desperate defense of the city, a Ukrainian soldier told CNN on Jan. 10.
According to the serviceman of Ukraine’s 46th Air Assault Brigade, which holds Soledar amid Russian onslaught, the situation in the city is “critical.” and the number of dead troops is now so high that “no one is counting them.”
“The situation is critical,” the soldier said.
“It’s tough. We will hold, to the last man.”
He described a dynamic battlefield where buildings change hands daily and fighters can't keep track of the death toll.
“No one will tell you how many dead and wounded there are,” he added.
“Because no one knows for sure… Positions are constantly being captured and recaptured. What was our building today, tomorrow becomes a (Russian private military company) Wagner building. In Soledar, no one counts the dead.”
The Ukrainian soldier also said that as of evening of Jan. 10, it’s unclear what part of the city was being held by the Russians.
“No one can say who has moved where and who is holding what, because no one knows exactly,” the soldier said.
“There is a huge gray zone in the city that everyone claims to control, but that's just empty words.”
He noted that Ukrainian ranks in Soledar are being replenished, and the battle for the city continues.
