Six Su-34 fighter jets have disappeared from a military airfield in the town of Yeysk, in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai, after explosions were heard nearby on Feb. 28, RFE/RL reported on March 3.

Satellite images provided by Planet.com confirmed that most Su-34 fighter jets normally based at the airfield were absent on March 2.

Several explosions, followed by visible columns of smoke, could be heard next to the Yeysk airfield on Feb. 28, reported local news outlet News Yeysk.

Yeysk regional governor Roman Bublik subsequently claimed that “military tactical exercises are being conducted” in the region.

Later, images were published showing the extent of the damage, including a fire on the air defense training ground located to the west of the airfield.

Yeysk is located 70 kilometers across the Sea of Azov from the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol, which is currently under Russian occupation.
