Three military recruiters charged after man left near trash bins in critical condition

Three officers from a territorial recruitment center were involved in abducting a man during a document check and then abandoning him near trash bins after he became seriously ill, police in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk Oblast reported on June 1.
Two of the three have already been formally charged.
According to investigators, the men were serving at one of the region’s TRCs at the time and were independently carrying out notification measures and updates of military registration data.
In the morning, on an almost empty street, the men spotted a draft-age civilian. Under the pretext of checking his documents, they approached him and, without waiting for a response, immediately grabbed him and forced him into a van.
Investigators said the man was subjected to psychological pressure and intimidation. When he began to feel ill, the men pushed him out onto the ground near a trash area and left, according to police.
One of the service members was serving as a combat medic and should have taken steps to help the man, investigators said.
The victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Soon after the incident, two of the men transferred to other military units, while the third remained at the recruitment center, police added.
Two suspects have been charged under Part 2 of Article 146 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code, which covers unlawful deprivation of liberty or kidnapping. In addition, the combat medic will also be charged under Part 3 of Article 135, abandoning a person in danger.
Charges are also being prepared for their former colleague. The men face criminal liability.
