The Ministry of Defense believes that the decisive battle of the Russian war against Ukraine has already begun, Defense Ministry spokesperson Oleksandr Motuznyak said in an interview with Ukrainian media outlet RBK published on April 20.

“In the last few days, the enemy has significantly increased offensive actions in the Eastern Operational Zone and increased the quantity of missile and artillery strikes along the entire front line,” Motuznyak said.

“That’s why we can now say that this decisive battle has already begun.”

He also stated that he was confident of the ability of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to maintain their positions in the Donbas, and that they are entirely capable of repelling this Russian offensive.

“Specifically, a broad Russian military offensive in the east of Ukraine would have occurred sooner or later,” the spokesperson said.

“But it’s important to remember that our Ukrainian cities and settlements in the east of the country are all large and small fortresses, which today bravely hold the line and  prevent the enemy in their plans to seize our entire territory,” Motuznyak said. “That’s why the battle for Donbas is, without exaggeration, the deciding battle for Ukraine.”

Russia’s goal is to drive the Ukrainian military to the administrative borders of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts and to hold a land corridor from the occupied Crimean peninsula to the Donbas, Motuznyak said.
