The American Patriot air defense systems have already arrived in Ukraine, the country’s defense minister, Oleksii Reznikov, wrote on Twitter on April 19.

“Today, our beautiful Ukrainian sky becomes more secure because Patriot air defense systems have arrived in Ukraine,” he tweeted.

Ukraine’s air defenders have mastered the system to the best of their ability, he said.

“And our partners have kept their word,” the official said and thanked his colleagues and the American, German, and Dutch people.

The main feature of the latest Patriot system is the ability to shoot down ballistic missiles. These include missiles that Russia uses to attack Ukraine, including Iskanders, Kinzhals (hypersonic air-to-air missiles), and Zircons (hypersonic anti-ship missiles).

The German government announced on April 18 that a new military aid package, including the Patriot system and an IRIS-T air defense system, had been delivered to Ukraine.

Earlier the United States, Germany, and the Netherlands vowed to transfer the Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine.

U.S. Department of Defense spokesman Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder said on March 30 that 65 Ukrainian troops had completed their Patriot air defense system training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

CNN reported on March 21, citing U.S. Department of Defense officials, that the Patriot air defense systems would be transferred to Ukraine sooner than previously planned.
