Trump considers NATO withdrawal amid tensions over Iran conflict

U.S. President Donald Trump is reviewing Washington’s support for European efforts to assist Ukraine, U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said during an interview with Newsmax on April 1.
“It is now very clear: President Trump is analyzing and reassessing everything — whether it is our participation in NATO, our support for European efforts in Ukraine, or any other actions by the United States,” Whitaker said.
The American public elected Trump to uphold an “America First” approach in all decisions, he added.
“As commander in chief, he has the authority to make many of these decisions,” Whitaker said. “We will act in accordance with his intentions once he makes them clear.”
“All options remain on the table,” he added.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington may need to rethink its relationship with NATO after the end of the war with Iran on March 31.
Trump has previously said the United States does not need support from NATO allies in a potential conflict with Iran and argued that the alliance would not come to Washington’s aid.
He also said on April 1 that he is seriously considering withdrawing the United States from NATO after allies refused to back his position on the Iran conflict. Trump described the alliance as a “paper tiger” and said the decision “would not be reconsidered.”
The Financial Times reported earlier, citing sources, that Trump had threatened to halt weapons supplies to Ukraine to pressure European allies to join a coalition aimed at unblocking the Strait of Hormuz.
