Trump threatens to tear down Kennedy Center

White House officials have threatened to tear down the John
F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. unless the courts
allow President
Donald Trump’s name to be added to the building’s facade, NBC News reported
on Aug. 26.
In court documents, U.S. Justice Department officials described the Kennedy Center as “structurally unsound, fundamentally unsafe, and embarrassing to the Nation’s Capital.”
The Justice Department also said the center’s board of trustees, all hand-picked by its self-appointed chairman, Trump, “recognizes that the efforts and authority of the president of the United States are the center’s only hope for financial survival and structural renewal.”
“Without these measures, the center will continue to deteriorate, becoming a dangerous, dilapidated structure that will have to be demolished,” Justice Department official Brantley T. Myers wrote.
On May 30, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia barred the Trump administration from renaming the center, ruling that only Congress has the authority to change its name.
On June 14, a federal appeals court in Washington declined to halt the removal of Trump’s name from the center’s facade.
On July 8, the same court ruled that Trump’s name
should not appear in the name of the Kennedy Center in Washington while it
considers his appeal of the decision restoring the center’s original name.
