“The Russian attack on Ukraine changed the formula of European security, changed our reality and our future,” Johnson said at a joint press conference with Finnish President Sauli Niinisto.

“We have witnessed the end of the post-Cold War era, and the attack on Ukraine, sadly, opened a new page.”

Johnson’s visit to Finland came as the country is mulling over possible accession to NATO, in wake of renewed Russian aggression in Europe. Johnson pledged that the UK would support Finland if Russia was to attack, in a mutual security deal. A similar agreement was signed with Sweden.

On April 20, the Finnish Parliament began a debate on the country's accession to NATO. The country is a partner of the Alliance, but does not have the same security guarantees as NATO members.

If Sweden and Finland join NATO, they will become Russia's opponents, Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said.

Finnish Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto believes that the country should not be afraid of Russian threats as they consider possible NATO membership.

According to various media outlets, Finland and Sweden may apply to join the Alliance next week.
