The UK has agreed to transfer several of its mine hunter ships to Ukraine, Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Vadym Prystaiko, said in an interview with public broadcaster Suspilne on July 31.

According to Prystaiko, Ukrainian sailors are already training to operate the vessels off the shores of Scotland.

“They (Ukrainian sailors) are already operating the ship and its weapons systems; there will be several such ships,” said Prystaiko.

Ukraine is in dire need of minehunter ships to secure safe passage of merchant vessels across the Black Sea, the ambassador said.

“We’re starting with two (ships), and will working up from there,” Prystaiko added.

“These are commissioned ships, currently in service of the Royal Navy.”

He noted that the ships will be modified to fit Ukraine’s needs.
