UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has agreed to send 12 Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine, with the first four to be delivered immediately, the UK tabloid The Sun reported on Jan. 14.

According to the newspaper’s source, Sunak held talks with UK defense and security chiefs, stressing that the delivery of tanks to Ukraine should be an "operational priority."

The Sun noted that the decision to supply a full squadron of Challenger 2 tanks was made after intense lobbying from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The Challenger 2 is the main battle tank of the British Army. The range of this vehicle is up to eight kilometers.

On Jan. 9, Sky News reported that London was considering the delivery of Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine for the first time. The publication stressed that such a step would mark a significant increase in Western support for Ukraine and could encourage other NATO allies, in particular Germany, to follow suit.
