The Ukrainian military in Bakhmut continues its defense operation, The Commander of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi, said on Telegram on May 24.
The general published a video with a captured Russian mercenary from the Veteran PMC, who was taken prisoner near Bakhmut.
"The Defense Forces continue the defensive operation and are making progress on the flanks of Bakhmut," Syrskyi wrote.
The Russian forces' offensive in the area "slightly decreased" over the day, and the Defense Forces made minor advances on the flanks to the north and south of Bakhmut, said Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar on May 23.
Wagner PMC leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, announced on May 20 the complete capture of Bakhmut by his mercenaries. The Ukrainian Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defense denied this information and said that the fighting in the city was ongoing.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Armed Forces of Ukraine remain in the Donbas city.
Malyar reported on May 21 that the Ukrainian military had taken Bakhmut into a double envelopment, continuing to maintain control over part of the city. Syrskyi also said that the Defense Forces were approaching the tactical encirclement of the city.
