It is exclusively up to Ukraine to determine when to engage in potential peace negotiations with Russia, German ambassador to Ukraine Anka Feldhusen said in an interview with Kyiv Not Kiev on Dec. 12.

In the interview that was posted by European Pravda on its YouTube channel, Feldhusen said there’s little point to attempt to negotiate a ceasefire with Russia at the moment.

“I think that my government was very clear about this – both the chancellor and the foreign minister,” said Feldhusen.

“They made it clear that under these circumstances, when Russia is bombing civilian infrastructure, there is no point in negotiating, and only Ukraine will decide when the time for negotiations has come.”

On Oct. 4, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has approved the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) decision that outlaws negotiations with Russia’s sitting president Vladimir Putin.

Ukraine’s negotiating position will depend on Kyiv’s success on the battlefield, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Oct. 26.

Zelenskyy later said Ukraine could find a format to hold talks with Moscow, provided it withdraws its troops from Ukrainian territory.
