Ukraine, Germany discuss mechanisms to return military-age men

Ukraine and Germany are discussing mechanisms to return military-age Ukrainians who illegally fled the country, Ambassador to Germany Oleksii Makeiev said in an interview with Ukrinform on July 2.
Makeiev noted that a joint working group has been established to share information between Ukrainian and German agencies.
“I will not disclose these mechanisms for now. They are being discussed within the framework of this joint working group,” Makeiev said, commenting on the mechanism to return military-age men to Ukraine.
These efforts are also being channeled through Unity Hub centers, the first of which launched in Berlin.
“The state is present here. It is expanding the range of services it can provide,” Makeiev said.
“Ukrainian citizens are also gaining more opportunities to communicate with each other.”
Makeiev pointed out that there are nearly 1.3 million Ukrainians in Germany today.
European Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner said on June 26 that the European Commission has proposed extending temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 4, 2028. The decision, however, will not apply to newly arriving Ukrainian men ages 23 to 60 who are subject to mobilization in Ukraine.
