Ukraine needs about 200 multipurpose aircraft to form four or five brigades to protect the entire territory, Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat said in an interview with Ukraine’s Channel 24 on March 16.

“Currently, we have five tactical aviation fighter brigades,” he said.

“There is also a brigade of attack aircraft, a brigade of bombers and transport brigades. Thus, on the contrary, we’re reducing the number thanks to multipurpose aircraft that will be on combat duty throughout the country, in particular at additional operational airfields.”

The debate about sending fighter jets to Ukraine is ongoing, said Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on March 16.

“This is something we’re discussing in the group of allied countries,” she said. “It’s a big wish from Ukraine.”

White House National Security spokesperson John Kirby confirmed on March 14 that the United States is okay with countries transferring fighter jets to Ukraine.

According to Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov, a positive decision on the transfer of aircraft to Ukraine is a matter of “one or two months.”

So far, Ukraine’s partners said that the transfer of aircraft to Ukraine is both a short- and long-term proposition.
