Russia should not be allowed to assume its scheduled April presidency of the UN Security Council, Ukrainian Permanent Representative at the UN, Serhiy Kyslytsya, said in a Twitter post on March 6.
"On the night of the Russian invasion, UN Secretary General António Guterres called it ‘the saddest day of his tenure," Kyslytsya said.
“This will be the saddest day in the history of the UN until April 1, 2023, if justice doesn’t prevail and the Russian Federation takes over the chairmanship of the Security Council.”
The ambassador noted that the decision to remove Russia from the UN Security Council and at least prevent its chairmanship in the Council is not within the competence of the UN Secretary General.
"This question is for the members of the (Security) Council,” Kyslytsya wrote.
“By now, the Russian Federation should already be experiencing the consequences of (its) aggression and crimes (committed in Ukraine)."
Mozambique presides over the UN Security Council in March, before Russia is scheduled to take over in April, as per UN regulation.
