Ukraine proposes to create a new alliance that will ensure security in Europe
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has shown that the entire architecture of European security needs to be revised, and that NATO does not have the power to stop the Kremlin’s dictator, said Ukrainian president advisor Mykhailo Podolyak in an interview with Polish news broadcaster Wiadomości.
According to him, what is important for Ukraine is not NATO status, but al-lies, “who are actually ready to fight on our side.”
“At the moment, NATO is an organization whose activities are mainly limited to the holding of summits,” Podolyak said.
“The truth is that the biggest military alliance in the history of mankind does not impress the Kremlin. All these talks about NATO moving closer to Russian borders is just a trick, propaganda for Russians in the domestic market to justify their invasion of Ukraine and other countries.”
Podolyak emphasized that Ukraine wants to end the war “by creating a new alliance strong enough to stop Russia if it wants to attack anyone again.”
He said that this should not be such a document as the Budapest Memorandum, but a specific agreement that meets all the norms of international law.
“It will describe step by step the mechanisms involved in the event of another invasion of Ukraine,” the advisor explained.
“We want to make sure we don't end up on the battlefield again. The countries that will act as guarantors, including Russia itself, will undertake certain commitments.”
He added that in the future, the document may be expanded and used as a basis for “a completely new alliance that will ensure the security of the whole of Europe.”
