Ukrainian special forces conducted raids deep into Russia’s Bryansk Oblast as early as June 2022, former commander of Ukraine’s 24th Separate Assault Battalion, Yevhen Dykyi, said in an interview with NV Radio on March 6.
“I won’t reveal a secret by saying that our Special Operations Forces have been operating in the Bryansk, Kursk, and Belgorod regions for a very long time,” said Dykyi.
“Our Special Forces are walking the Russian rear, blowing up things that need to be blown up. I even knew the fighters who went on raids in Bryansk region, and those were deep – not 20 kilometers from the border, as in this case (the operation of Russian Volunteer Corps on March 2), But 70, 100 kilometers – back in June last year.”
According to the former commander, the inclusion of Russian volunteer fighters in these raids doesn’t change anything, militarily speaking.
“But it does from a political point of view,” he added.
“The public appearance of Russian volunteers, who are already demonstrating that they have the audacity to walk around Russian territory…, and call to rebel against Putin, is at least a very strong slap in the face to the Kremlin regime.”
Russian media claimed on March 2 that a group of Ukrainian “saboteurs” had crossed the border into Bryansk Oblast (which borders Ukraine and Belarus), engaged in firefights, took several people hostage, and inflicted civilian casualties.
Furthermore, Russian propagandists spread false reports about an “attack” on a school bus, as well as the “injury” and even “killing of a girl,” only to deny these reports later.
Ukrainian officials quickly dismissed the reports as a Russian false flag. A group called Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK) later announced on its official Telegram channel that a group of its fighters had indeed crossed the Russian border, though denied targeting any civilians or taking hostages.
The commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps, Denis Nikitin (Kapustin), claims that the raid on Bryansk was agreed upon with Ukrainian authorities.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said that the events in Bryansk region were either a false flag operation or actions of "Russian partisans."
