Ukraine’s largest national oil and gas company Naftogaz has struck a deal for the supply of almost half a billion cubic meters of additional gas to get Ukraine through the winter, head of the company Oleksiy Chernyshov said on Dec. 23.

“I’m glad to announce that we have agreed on a delivery of 350 million cubic meters of gas from our important partner, the Norwegian energy company Equinor, and procured an additional 100 million cubic meters from EBRD authorized gas traders,” said Chernyshov.

He said that Ukraine needs about 2 billion cubic meters more to support power generation, which is constantly under fire by the Russian military.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking at the Council of the European Union on Dec. 15, said that Ukraine needs 2 billion cubic meters of gas and electricity worth EUR 800 million ($850 million).

“Any blackouts in Ukraine are blows to your social systems due to new waves of migration,” Zelenskyy said.

“Any attempts by Russia to show that allegedly Ukraine does not have sufficient stability are attempts to show the world that Europe does not have sufficient stability.”
