It is impossible to create an analogue of the Iron Dome in Ukraine for complete protection against Russian missiles and drones in the coming years, the spokesman for the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Yuriy Ihnat, said during the national telethon on Jan. 3.

"In the coming years, we will not be able to create a single ‘dome’ over the entire territory of Ukraine,” he explained.

“It is physically impossible, because it is simply impossible to place air defense systems along such a length of our borders and block strategically important objects inside the state. This is really a huge amount of equipment. It is extremely expensive, it requires a lot of state and human resources.”

According to Ihnat, air defense systems in other countries are used to cover certain areas and certain objects. Another part of the air defense of the state is performed by fighters — multi-purpose aircraft, which are part of air defense.

"Planes that can quickly take off from the airfield and get to the area where it is necessary to intercept a cruise missile, drone, or aircraft — they act quickly and efficiently," he noted.

The representative of the Air Force added that Ukraine is now doing everything possible to get F-16 fighters.

Together with NASAMS, IRIS-T and Patriot air defense systems, they would work effectively.

"(These are) three promising systems that will become the basis of air defense, together with the Air Defense of the Ground Forces, together with the aircraft,” Ihnat concluded.

“They are needed in a certain quantity so that our air defense forces can continue to work effectively, covering the most important strategic objects of the state.”

In September, Politico, citing sources, wrote that Ukraine no longer publicly asks the United States for Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems, F-16 fighters and Grey Eagle drones, but hopes to agree on the supply by changing the tactics of negotiations.

During mass missile attacks, Ukrainian air defense forces show impressive effectiveness, shooting down most Russian missiles. The rate of downed suicide drones has reached 100% in recent days.
