Ukraine’s legislature approves bill for civilian firearm regulations

23 February 2022, 05:50 PM

The Ukrainian parliament on Feb. 23 adopted a draft law on the civilian ownership of firearms, making it easier for Ukrainian citizens to buy guns for personal defense.

The draft law was supported by 274 MPs, with four against, and another 42 abstaining.

The bill defines the concept of civilian ownership of firearms, classifies them, and provides citizens the right to use them for self-defense, as well as establishing the conditions and procedures for obtaining firearm permits.

Earlier, Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov spoke out in favor the legalization of weapons in Ukraine.

“I am convinced that this must be done, because in Ukraine there is no law that principally regulates the circulation of weapons. In our country, this is regulated only by departmental acts,” he said.
