Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has elaborated on one of the goals of his surprise visit to the United Kingdom on Feb. 8, in a post on Telegram messenger.
Zelenskyy said that he was in London to personally thank the British people for supporting Ukraine in the fight against Russian invasion forces.
"The United Kingdom was one of the first to come to Ukraine's aid," Zelenskyy said.
"And today I'm in London to personally thank the British people for their support and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for his leadership."
He also shared a photo with the British PM at London Airport.
The news that the Ukrainian President would pay an official visit to London only surfaced on Feb. 8. This is his second foreign visit after a trip to the United States, and his first visit to the United Kingdom since the outbreak of the full-scale war.
Zelenskyy’s plane was reported to have landed in London at around 12:30 pm.
The president then met with Sunak and addressed the UK’s parliament, and is further scheduled to meet King Charles and then visit Ukrainian troops undergoing training and exercises in Britain.
There are also reports that an expansion of the training program will be announced to include fighter pilots and marines. Additionally, London plans to announce the provision of long-range weapons to Ukraine.
