Ukraine’s President Zelensky invited to speak at European Parliament
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has been invited to speak at an upcoming session of the European Parliament, Ukraine’s Presidential Office said in a statement on Feb. 16.
The invitation was extended during a phone call between Zelensky’s Deputy Chief-of-Staff Ihor Zhovkva and Alessandro Chiocchetti, Deputy Head of Cabinet of the President of the European Parliament.
They discussed the recent debate in the parliament on the subject of European security and the Russian military threat to Ukraine.
“Crucially, the debate highlighted that the EU, in lockstep with (its) international partners, is prepared to enact severe sanctions (against Russia), in case of further Russian aggression against Ukraine,” said Zhovkva.
He referred to the debate as “symbolic”, since it happened as Ukraine was celebrating Unity Day on Feb. 16.
According to some U.S. media outlets, Feb. 16 would have been the probable date for the start of a possible further Russian military invasion of Ukraine. U.S President Joe Biden warned that the threat of such an action would continue in the days and weeks ahead, in a special address on Feb. 15.
