Ukraine's SBU security service has prevented the large-scale embezzlement of equipment for Ukrainian servicemen, SBU spokesman Artem Dekhtiarenko said on Telegram messenger on May 19.

He said that those involved in the case had attempted to illegally sell more than 1,000 bulletproof vests worth over UAH 12 million ($410,256).

"These means of protection were made in Ukraine by a public organization and were to have been handed over for defense purposes through Cherkasy Military Administration," Dekhtiarenko said.

"However, instead of handing them over to Ukrainian defenders for free, officials tried to sell the bulletproof vests through affiliated commercial structures and a supermarket chain."
