Ukraine prepares Zelenskyy-Magyar talks after Orbán’s defeat in Hungary

Ukraine has reached out to Hungary about possible talks
between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Peter Magyar after his party’s
election victory, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said, according to Interfax-Ukraine.
The move suggests Kyiv sees a chance to reset ties with
Budapest after years of friction over Ukraine’s path toward European Union
membership and other disputes.
“We believe we have received the right European news from
this country, which opens new opportunities for us and gives us a chance to
begin a new good-neighborly chapter in our shared history. The people deserve
such open relations. We want this and have already sent signals about relevant
contacts at the level of the president of Ukraine and, accordingly, Mr. Magyar,”
Sybiha said during the opening of an updated defense solutions exhibition
marking Ukraine’s Defense Industry Workers’ Day.
Sybiha said Ukraine is waiting for a response from Hungary
and wants to establish contact between Zelenskyy and Magyar. He said Kyiv hopes
to address a broad range of issues with Budapest, from border infrastructure to
cooperation on European matters.
“Speaking globally, this means lifting Hungary’s block as a
country standing in the way of our membership in the European Union. This is
also about the 20th sanctions package, 90 billion in credit, and the formal
opening of clusters,” Sybiha said.
He added that Ukraine is also ready to implement the highest
Council of Europe and EU standards on national minorities.
Hungary held parliamentary elections on April 12. With
98.32% of the vote counted, Tisza was leading and was set to win 138 seats in
parliament, while Fidesz was headed for 55 and Our Homeland six.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said he accepted his
party’s defeat and congratulated Magyar on the win.
Zelenskyy also congratulated Magyar on the victory, saying
Europe and every European country “must become stronger, and millions of
Europeans want cooperation and stability.”
